The presence of behavioral types within a system may qualitatively and quantitatively change how we predict species to interact. Therefore within the "B-Types" project I'm investigating how behavioral types influence food web dynamics. Food webs are composed of multiple species that can interact through predation or competition events and the outcome of these events may be determined by the behavioral types of both players. Predators are well known for generating trophic cascades within food webs, however, whether the nature of these cascades depends upon predator behavioral types is unknown. By using simple food web mesocosms I am testing how behavioral types within a predator population can determine predation levels and competition among prey species. These cascading trophic effects may have important consequences on community dynamics by altering prey and resource abundance and distributions in previously unexpected ways.
